Magnolia Magazine
Welcome to the official website of Magnolia Magazine! As a small youth run literary magazine, our aim is to allow young creatives with big dreams to publish their work and gain some experience where they are often denied this chance to have their work seen due to their age or inexperience. We hope to create a space where these writers and artists can blossom together all while supporting one another and seeing each others pieces published in our issues. While we prioritize these younger contributors due to our magazine's target audience being young people, older contributors are welcome and encouraged too as we find it important to allow everyone access to a space where they can share their stories. This supportiveness and sense of community are super important to us and we value each and every one of our contributors, ensuring they feel good about putting their work in our magazine. We want to see dreamers with goals that feel impossible use submitting to us as a step towards making those dreams a little more possible!
Check Out Our Instagram
If you're looking to get involved with our magazine, keeping an eye on our Instagram page will be helpful. There we announce any and all submission opportunities and even post some motivation to help writers throughout their creative process. Pretty much anything there is to know about us is on Instagram, so if you want some more information on us, it would be helpful to check there too!
Submission Guidelines
- We have a maximum of 3 submissions per person for each issue. These submissions can be in different categories (a drawing, and a poem for example).
- If you've already published work with us, you can submit again to future issues, competitions, etc.
- We ask that submissions are kept under 2000 words.
- Contributors between the ages of 12 and 25 are prioritized as this is primarily a youth magazine, but anybody is welcome to submit
- We do accept previously published work, though we ask that you make sure the first publisher is okay with this too and let us know who they are so we can properly credit them
- We also accept simultaneous submissions!
- No pieces containing any kind of hate speech or hurtful language will be tolerated. We ask that you treat any sensitive topics with consideration.
- No use of AI to create submissions will be tolerated
Issue 01: Through the Decades
For our very first issue, through the decades, we sought pieces relating to one, if not multiple, different eras in modern history. This could be a recounting of childhood nostalgia from the 2000s, a throwback to a past decade that you wish you were around to live in, or even a prediction of what you think future decades may look like. Read this fabulous journey through time below!
Issue 02: Dark Academia
For our second issue, our theme is dark academia! This theme encapsulates the energy of dark autumn days spent consumed by academic pursuits like reading literature or intently studying your passions. Inspired by works like Donna Tartt's The Secret History, send us your poetry and stories about the completely awful yet incredibly intelligent characters of the world, your own academic obsessions, the darker side of passion, or even just your pretentious ramblings.
Issue 03: Under the Spotlight
For our third issue, our theme is under the spotlight! With this theme, we are seeking pieces that capture the feeling of being the focus of something, whether for good or for bad. This could be a piece that takes the theme more literally and discusses how it feels to be on stage, writing discussing the more behind the scenes rivalries of becoming that center of attention, or even a longing to be under the spotlight after usually being left in the shadows. Our theme can be interpreted in many ways, so don't stress if your idea doesn't match one of these exact descriptions.
